Silicone-coated release paper is a category of release paper. It is a functional specialty paper manufactured by coating one or both sides of base paper evenly with organosilicon release agent, which cures to form a smooth surface with a barrier layer.
Note: In technical classification, “release paper” is the superordinate concept, while silicone‑coated release paper is its subset and common term.
- Release Paper: Paper-based material coated with release agent (mostly silicone, also non-silicone alternatives) for anti-adhesion performance, featuring peelability.
- Silicone-coated release paper:Specifically refers to release paper using organosilicon as release agent, the most widely-used type of release paper.
Core properties: anti-adhesion, oil-resistance, water-repellency and easy peelability. It is divided into industrial grade and food-contact grade; food-grade silicone-coated release paper is commonly used for baking and food packaging.
I. Three-layer basic structure (standard single-sided silicone-coated release paper)
- Base layer: base paper (kraft paper, glassine paper, coated base paper)
- Middle layer: primer coat (required for certain high-weight or porous base paper, to seal paper pores and prevent silicone penetration into paper core)
- Surface layer: silicone coat (organosilicon release agent, core barrier layer)
II. Two major base material categories
- Glassine silicone-coated release paper
Base paper super-calendered, featuring dense, semi-transparent texture and minimal pores; no primer coat required. Low silicone penetration and stable peel force. Basis weight: 30-80 gsm. Mainly applied in baking, labels and adhesive tape industries.
- Kraft silicone-coated release paper (conventional oil-proof silicone-coated paper)
Natural or white kraft base paper with porous texture, primer coating is mandatory for pore sealing. Basis weight: 70-140 gsm. High stiffness. Used for cake liner, trays and industrial gaskets.
III. Key functional characteristics
- Anti-adhesive barrier: Hot-melt adhesive, sugar paste, chocolate and resin do not stick to paper surface; clean peeling without residue.
- Oil-resistant and lightly water-repellent, blocks oil-water permeation.
- Tunable peel force: light-peel, standard-peel and heavy-peel grades for adhesive tapes, pressure-sensitive labels and baking scenarios.
- Distinction from ordinary oil-proof paper: Ordinary oil-proof paper only provides oil resistance without anti-adhesion property; sticky sugar mass and hot-melt adhesive will adhere to its surface.
Ⅳ.Primary application scenarios
1. Food-contact grade
- Baking: oven liner, cookie/cake baking paper, paper baking cups, steaming paper.
- Food processing: interleaving paper for candy, nougat and chocolate; liner for frozen and fried food.
2. Industrial grade
- Backing paper for self-adhesive labels, double-sided tapes and foam tapes.
- Release gaskets for composite materials, fiberglass-reinforced plastics and resin processing.
- Interleaving paper for leather and rubber manufacturing.
V. Core differences between food-contact grade and industrial grade
- Food-contact silicone-coated release paper adopts solvent-free or low-solvent food-grade silicone, complying with GB 4806.8, with no heavy metals, no harmful substance migration and good high-temperature resistance.
- Industrial-grade silicone-coated release paper uses solvent-borne silicone with industrial additives; direct contact with hot food is prohibited.
